The bridge is hydraulic, which means that it is driven by water under pressure. The red and blue pipes in this picture run from the accumulator to the engine (red) and from the overflow or feeder tank (blue). The workings of the Bridge are kept spotlessly clean and freshly painted by the staff who also continually polish the brasses as well as keeping the Bridge in good mechanical order. Keeping the upper reaches of the Bridge, the span and roadway in good order is the responsibility of the local authority.
